Mira Mesa to Celebrate 4th of July Weekend with Fireworks Sunday, July 2, at 9pm
There WILL be fireworks in Mira Mesa on the 4th of July weekend this year! The fireworks display will be set off on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at 9pm, from the new joint use fields now under construction at Wangenheim Middle School. The public will be able to gather at Hourglass Field Community Park, just across Black Mountain Road, as a prime viewing location. Find out more at the Mira Mesa Town Council meeting on Monday, May 1, 2023, when Michael Spencer, President of Scripps Mesa Fireworks, the volunteer non-profit group who raise the money needed and put on the fireworks show, will be a featured speaker. The meeting begins at 7pm in the community room of the Mira Mesa Branch Library, 8405 New Salem St.
“We are bringing back fireworks for the 4th of July Weekend in 2023!” Michael Spencer announced at the Mira Mesa Community Planning Group meeting on April 17, 2023.
This will be the first fireworks display in Mira Mesa since the pandemic.
“Now, this year will be a little different than celebrations in the past. The show will be at 9pm on July 2, 2023, the Sunday before Independence Day, and it will be at Wangenheim Middle School instead of Mira Mesa High School,” Spencer said.
Do you want to come to a Mira Mesa Community Picnic at Hourglass Field Community Park during the afternoon / early evening of Sunday, July 2, leading up to time for the fireworks display?
Mira Mesa Town Council president Bari Vaz has been in contact with City of San Diego Parks & Recreation Manager and received permission for MMTC to host the event. Following Michael Spencer, she will speak about that at the May 1 MMTC meeting and ask for volunteers who’d like to help in organizing it.
Hourglass Field Community Park is a San Diego City / Community College District joint use facility, located on the southwest corner of Miramar College at Black Mountain Road and Gold Coast Drive. The park is the prime viewing location for the 2023 fireworks.
Michael Spencer told the Mira Mesa Community Planning Group that Scripps Mesa Fireworks currently has most of the funds needed for this year’s display, but still needs to raise about $4,000 to pay for the show.
“Your donations are key. We receive no money from City, State, or County sources, strictly from our gracious sponsors, and donors. We are so excited to return, and hope that we can keep this tradition going for another 40 plus years!”
Scripps Mesa Fireworks is a 501c(3) nonprofit group. Donations for the fireworks show may be made at:
